This is a noble venture by TWB. To truly tackle this issue, a good starting point will be to start a advocacy platform to encourage NGO’s to have native Africans on staff in prominent roles. Africans would know the various languages within their region. Even if they can’t speak/understand the language, they would know it exist and serve as advocates to provide useful translations.
For example, natives would know that translating Kiswahili is not as impactful as say translating Hausa or even Yoruba. Most Kiswahili speakers already have a first prominent language. If the issue is to lessen the language barrier to disseminating information, it would help if the creators of the information had a nuance understanding of the people they are trying to reach…..
For Hillary Clinton’s latest trip to Africa, she probably didn’t need to take along many translators or interpreters. Maybe just a French speaker. Of the nine countries on her itinerary, seven are considered Anglophone and two Francophone.
